Horse Vet Course - A practical course for horse owners, trainers and breeders.
 

  • Find it hard to interpret the vet's cert when buying or selling?

  • This course is suitable for horse owners, livery yard owners, trainers or anyone working in the horse industry looking to improve their knowledge and skills. It is a practical hands on course and not a day of lectures!

 
COURSE OUTLINE

  • Each session will start with a power point presentation involving many visual aids - pictures, videos and discussion… 
  • We will then move out to the treatment room where some horses will be waiting… It is here that the 'hands on' practical/ workshop will begin…

 
SESSION 1
A :- How to deal with common injuries
B :- Wounds and wound management - What's serious, what's not and how to tell the difference!
C :- Bandaging, tourniquets, splinting and poulticing.
 
SESSION 2
A :- Vetting your horse and common problems. Decision time will be a lot less challenging in future
B :- Conformation - what to forgive and what to avoid!
C :- Some common conditions seen at the 'vettings' eg. Lameness, Sarcoids, Wobblers, Stringhalt, Wind problems - roaring, whistling
 
SESSION 3
A :- Case histories. A fun and lively topic where we present case histories. This visual topic serves to engage you through video scenarios. You will be encouraged for your input on each case. A fun and valuable way to learn
B :- Aging horses
 
SESSION 4
A :- Recognising the sick horse. How to take temperature, look at and interpret colour of gums, take heart rate, pulse ,respiratory rate etc. Determine if your horse is dehydrated
B :- Injections and handling syringes and needles
C :- What to do when waiting for a vet in an emergency
 
ABOUT COURSE VETS
 
JACQUELINE YEOMANS

  • Jacqui has been an equine vet for 12 years. She is a graduate of the Veterinary College of Ireland at U.C.D. during which period she also attended Colorado State University.
  • After qualifying ,she completed an equine internship in Anglesey Lodge Veterinary Hospital, The Curragh. She also worked in Peasebrook Equine Hospital in Cheltenham.
  • She is currently working as an equine veterinary practitioner in County Meath.
  • Jacqui is a keen horse enthusiast, owning and breeding both thoroughbreds and sporthorses and enjoys all things equine.

 
SUE O'DOHERTY

  • Sue has worked exclusively as an Equine Vet for the last 11 years, working in Ireland, New Zealand and the UK. She is currently working in an Equine Practice in Wicklow.
  • Sue is also a keen rider and enjoys Hunting, Eventing and Riding club activities. She is also a Racing fan takes a keen interest in breeding.
