Mares and fillies July Sale at Tattersalls in Newmarket

- Catch up on the main highlights from the mares and fillies July Sale.

Day 1 Highlights

- J P McManus’s racing manager, Frank Berry bought the top lot from the mares and fillies July Sale at Tattersalls in Newmarket on Day 1. He paid 175,000gns for Top Spin, a 4yo Cape Cross from the family of Grand Lodge. He has won twice including a 14f handicap at Killarney.  He has an entry in the Gr.1 Irish Field St Leger and the Ebor Handicap but he will likely skip those and will go over hurdles instead.

- Michael Donohoe from BBA Ireland paid 80,000gns for Trishuli, a 4yo unraced daughter of the late sire Indian Ridge. She is a full-sister to Imperial Stride, who won the Gr.2 Scottish Derby and High Pitched, a Gr.3 winner and a half-sister to Zero Tolerance who was a Listed winner. She is from the Sadler’s Wells mare Place De L’Opera who is a daughter of Madame Dubois, who was the dam of Gr.1 Irish 2000 Guineas winner Indian Haven. She is also carrying a Mount Nelson foal and they will be going back to Ireland and will be covered next time at Coolmore Stud.

Day 2 Highlights

- Greece-based agent Anani Antoniadis bought the top lot on day 2 for the Russian stud owner Vartan Vartanov, for 80,000gns. The filly, One Day In Spain, is an unraced daughter of Red Ransom and is from the Diesis mare Capistrano Day who was a Listed winner and Gr.3 placed. She also has full-sister who was runner-up in a Gr.3 at Goodwood. She will now go to Joe Rogers’ Ballintry Stud in Ireland while they decide on a stallion, possibly from Darley or Coolmore but will take more time to study her pedigree before a decision is made.

- John Oxx’s Currabeg Stables sold a 3yo daughter of Namid called Redskin Dancer for 70,000gns. She won a maiden at Naas last season and has a few black type sisters, including Redstone Dancer who was a winner of two Gr.3's and Red Liason who won a Listed race and was placed in a Gr.2 in Germany. She was bought by Jim Atkinson under James Ortega Bloodstock and they might put her back into training. She will be a good breeding prospect for the future anyway.

- Mags O’Toole and Eddie Harty fought it out for another from John Oxx’s stable, His Excellency, and it was O'Toole who got the King’s Best gelding in the end for 65,000gns. He was bought in 2009 for 42,000gns for Sheikh Mohammed and he recently won a handicap at Leopardstown, which impressed O'Toole.

Day 3 Highlights

-The top lot on day 3 was the 3yo colt Casual Glimpse, who finished 2nd in a conditions race at Newmarket on Thursday. He was bought by Qatar owner Mohammed Alattiah for 83,000gns. The son of Compton Place was trained by Richard Hannon but will now switch to Jassim Al-Ghazali and will be aimed at the Qatar Derby in the end of December.

- Jim Bolger sold his 2yo debut winner and Listed runner up Snowflake Dancer for 70,000gns to Newmarket trainer Willie Musson. The winner of that race has since won the Gr.2 Railway Stakes and Bolger's colt added more black type to his name when finished 3rd of 3 in a Listed race at Leopardstown. He is a son of Dylan Thomas out of a Sadler’s Wells mare Snowy Day In LA, who is a half-sister to Kistena, a winner of the Gr.1 Prix de l’Abbaye.

- Gorden Elliott bought Musawama with Bobby O’Ryan's son Aidan, for his new owners Martin and Maureen Flinter, for 55,000gns. This 3yo colt by Azamour is a two time winner on Polytrack over 10f for John Gosden. The plan is to geld him and then go jumping with him.

- Gorden Elliott teamed up with O’Ryan again for another new owner to Elliot, Craig Bird, to buy Canna, a son of High Chaparral for 38,000gns. He finished 2nd at Warwick 24hrs earlier over 11f for trainer Barry Hills. The plan is to go jumping with him.

- Dermot Cantillon bought the filly Moonlight Rhapsody for 52,000gns after he had been thinking about stallion options for her while driving to the sales! She won at Lingfield earlier this year and is a daughter of Danehill Dancer. She is a half-sister to the Australian Gr.2 winner Fantastic Love and is by the Sadler’s Wells mare Moon Flower, who is a half-sister to top class miler and sire Last Tycoon and she also has 5 other successful foals. She will now retire to his Tinnakill Stud and he thinks Acclamation might suit her.

- Irish born Janet Elliott, who is better known for her success with jumpers in the USA and is a member of American racing’s Hall Of Fame, paid 32,000gns for the 3yo gelding, Canaveral. He is a half-brother to the Gr.3 winner and Gr.1 placed Enforcer and is by Cape Cross. He was trained by Brian Meehan and had already won twice this season. He will now go hurdling in the States.
